Sooner or Later

When I change Owen's diaper, Caroline has a habit of crawling into the room and wanting to examine, up close and personally, the wet and dirty diapers. I try and try to keep her from getting them. I move the diaper. I move her. I take her out into the hallway and run back, only to have that little mut right back into the mess again just as I'm sitting back down - have I mentioned how quick she is crawling? No wonder she doesn't want to walk - to finish with Owen.

So, the other day I thought I would be smart. That was my first mistake. Remember when we turned the doorknob on Owen's bedroom? I closed the door to change Owen's dirty diaper. Caroline was in the family room playing. But, before closing the door, I first made sure that it was unlocked and it was. I double checked the door and then triple checked. I was good to go.

The next thing I knew, I heard Caroline's little hands scratching the door. Scratch, scratch, scratch, scratch. Silence. Scratch, scratch, scratch, scratch. Silence. I finished changing Owen, uninterrupted and went to open the door. CRAP!!!! That "silence" really wasn't silence at all. Instead, it was Caroline reaching up and turning the lock on the doorknob. Caroline locked Owen and I in the room. The oven is on with dinner in the oven, along with the stove top being on as well. No cell phone or house phone with me, no way to call anyone for help.

No biggie. I'll just crawl through the window, out and around the house back through the garage and I'm good to go. WRONG!!!! The Einstein who installed the sunscreens on our windows did it incorrectly. Instead of using the track for the bug screen, they screwed the sunscreen into the frame of the window. No way to get out without cutting the screen. Fortunately, Adam was only a few minutes from home. I hung out with Owen and read some books.

But, did I mentioned I screamed and screamed and screamed some more (I don't have a quiet voice mind you) for some help from my neighbors who were outside in their driveway across the street! Neither one claims to have heard me, but I sure could hear them.

I heard Adam come home, open the garage door, and then finally come in the house. I told Owen to knock on the door and call for "Daddy". He did a great job at calling "Daddy" and knocking, knocking, knocking. However, it wasn't until I screamed one more time for my neighbor that Adam finally came to Owen's room and unlocked the door. He thought that since I was reading to Owen, which he heard, that I wanted to be left alone to spend some time with Owen. I didn't (and still don't) understand that one, but hey all is well.

I was "chastised" by the hard-of-hearing neighbor when she said, "that's what you get for turning the knob." I knew sooner or later this little story was bound to happen. But, ya know what? I do it again and still without any reservations.

Oh, I can so relate. We did the same thing to one of our doors. It had been like that for a while with no problem. Well Karli locked her, Brendan and I in there. Carson was in his highchair and I could hear him calling. I tried to pop the lock with part of a belt, that didn't work. Yes, I had to climb out the window in my pj's pulled it down so my garments weren't showing. And go to my neighbor who is in the ward. She climbed back through the window had a tool to pop the lock, got Carson and came out the front door. She saved me! Now, we keep a key in the room.

Funny! Hey, I don't think you knew April Price....she was in the Bella Vista Ward awhile back. All THREE of her children literally ambushed her and locked her in one of the bedrooms, all of which are upstairs! She was in there for 4-5hours. No one heard her, her kids were having a ball distroying the house and she went crazy. Ever since I heard that story, whenever I get the urge to want to do that to the doorknobs, I remember April's experience! Lucky for you Adam was on his way home.....think about if this happened in the morning?!

Ooops... I guess I forgot to remind you to put the door keys in each room when I was singing the praises of turning the knobs around. They go best on the molding of the door....just INSIDE the room.
